The Best Beaches Near Tamarindo & How to Reach Them
White sand, surf breaks, and crushed-shell shores — a local guide to the best beaches around Tamarindo and the easiest way to reach each one.
By Lilos Rentals

Tamarindo sits in the middle of one of Costa Rica''s most beautiful coastlines. Within a short ride you will find calm swimming coves, legendary surf breaks, and beaches made of crushed shells. Here is our local guide to the best of them — and how to get there.
Playa Tamarindo
The main beach: lively, golden, and perfect for surfing, sunbathing, and people-watching. Everything is within walking or golf-cart distance from town.
Playa Langosta
Five minutes south, Langosta is quieter and more upscale, with tide pools and a beautiful estuary. A scooter or golf cart gets you there in no time.
Playa Grande
Across the estuary to the north, this protected beach is wild and uncrowded — a nesting site for leatherback turtles and a magnet for surfers. Reach it by road around the estuary, or by boat taxi across.
Playa Avellanas
About 25–30 minutes south, Avellanas blends mangroves, surf, and the famous Lola''s restaurant. The road is part paved, part dirt — ideal for a scooter adventure.
Playa Negra
A little further, Playa Negra is a rocky, dramatic beach with a world-class right-hand reef break made famous by surf films. Worth the bumpy final stretch.
Playa Conchal
Near Brasilito, Conchal is famous for its shores made of tiny crushed shells and crystal-clear, turquoise water. It is the furthest of this list — plan for a full day.
Playa Flamingo
A picture-perfect white-sand bay to the north, great for swimming and calmer water. Best reached by car or as part of a longer scooter day if you are confident on the roads.
How to choose: want calm water? Go Langosta or Flamingo. Chasing surf? Avellanas, Negra, or Grande. After that postcard shot? Conchal.
Most of these are an easy ride away. Rent a scooter or golf cart from us and we will deliver it free with a route map to your favourite beaches.
